Dear Families,
It is my complete joy to teach your children in concert choir. Students work hard and cooperatively in rehearsal and I invite you to observe at any time! The doors are always open for visitors.
My pedagogic goals for our choir are as follows:
1. Develop each individual voice. We do this with rigorous voice builders and warm-ups that develop range and tone, designed to help each voice mature appropriately. 2. Develop each individual ear. We are infusing a lot of solfege work into our voice building time. They help us develop our understanding of all possible pitch relationships so that students can sing in tune while they are decoding music.
3. Excellence in choral singing and independent musicianship. This year, we continue to explore acapella music in addition to our standard repertoire to increase rigor in the choral rehearsal. While we depend on each other to make music, the concert choir rehearsal process fosters independent musicianship skills so we can make exceptional music. We are focusing primarily on uniform vowel sounds, which allow for increased resonance and beauty while singing.
4. Student Leadership. We will be flexing our leadership skills with the installation of section leaders, student conductors, choir managers, and choir ambassadors to help direct and shape our rehearsals and serve as the “Voice of the Choirs” in the community.
5. Making friends and having fun! Concert Choir rehearses in various formations, including circles so that students face each other while singing. This helps them to hear all of the parts in our SSA repertoire and engage more with singers around them since they can see all of the choir members.
This fall, we are focusing on repertoire that inspires challenge and beautiful singing. In addition to our traditional combined “We Gather” and “Let the Music Fill Your Soul,” I have selected a unison performance of “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” (a song to be performed at a private wedding later in the year) in German. Complemented by a joyful tune attributed to Mozart set to the “abc’s” intended as a musical joke, and balanced by a stunning musical reflection of the desert and ocean, with collaborations with Cantus and Choristers, Concert Choir has its challenges ahead of them! I am excited about our growth and what promises to be an outstanding year of making excellent music together!
Sincerely,
Alyson Moore
