Alumni Spotlight: Calista Goldwasser

  1. What years were you active in SLCC?
    • I sang with the St. Louis Children’s Choirs from 2005 to 2017.
  1. What is your best memory of being a part of SLCC?
    • My fondest memory comes from my second to last year in Concert Choir, where we travelled with the entire ensemble to Kansas City to perform at the SWACDA conference. It was so special sharing that experience with everyone in Concert Choir, and traveling with my very best friends, doing what we love most—singing together.
  1. How do you think being a part of SLCC has impacted you?
    • I credit The St. Louis Children’s Choirs for setting me on this path toward finding a musical career. It was through my time with the choirs that I found my passion for classical music, and my passion for teaching voice to the next generation of musicians. The skills I developed throughout my time also directly impacted the way I handle myself in professional music settings, allowing me to excel in challenging opportunities.
  1. What is an important lesson you learned during your time at SLCC?
    • After singing with SLCC for over a decade, I think the most significant takeaway for me is that a good choral musician is a team player, listening attentively to their director, but even more to the people around you. Successful collaboration requires selflessness, dedication, and accountability.
  1. What do you think the community should know about SLCC?
    • I think the skills that students learn by singing in a choir extend far past the music. I believe that being a member of a choir, especially at such a young age provides an invaluable lesson of what it means to be part of a team working toward a goal much larger than any one individual.
